Guanajuato, its name deriving from the Tarascan Quanax-Huato, meaning "Place of Frogs", is situated in a narrow gorge surrounded by stunning scenery.

It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 and is well-known for its colorful and beautiful colonial buildings. For centuries Guanajuato was the wealthiest city in Mexico due to the activity of the gold and silver mines.

You can explore the city on foot along cobblestone streets and through tunnels as you visit various parks and squares, where you’ll find outdoor mime performances and other street artists.

International Cervantes Festival

If you’re in Guanajuato during the last week of October, you can enjoy the International Cervantes Festival, Mexico’s most important cultural event, which offers live music, theatrical and dance performances, and much more.

Monumento al Pipila

For fantastic panoramic views of the city, the Monumento al Pipila is well worth a visit — this monument is dedicated to Pipila, Guanajuato's very own Independence hero.

Guanajuato is also the birthplace of Diego Rivera, Mexico's famous muralist.
