Desert Homestead Lodge is set in a wide grassy valley, sheltered by the Nubib, Tsaris and Naukluft mountains. It has a relaxed atmosphere and offers plenty of character, with high, thatched roofs, whitewashed buildings and rustic furniture.
The main lodge has an open-plan living room with comfortable leather sofas and soft African fabrics, as well as featuring a bar and restaurant area. To the front of the building is a pool, which is ideal for a refreshing dip in the afternoons or for relaxing around on the sun deck. Sweeping views of the surrounding desert landscape and mountains beyond can be enjoyed throughout the property, and the cozy chalets offer both comfort and privacy.
The owners of this charming lodge are friendly and relaxed, making you feel instantly at home. We think it’s a great little place with a characterful African style, and we warmly recommend it.

Rooms
The thatched chalets are tastefully decorated, featuring pale linens complemented by dark wood furniture, double or twin beds and en suite bathrooms. Each chalet also has its own private veranda, which is protected from the sun by an overhead canopy and offers views out to the Rotterkaum Mountains. Mosquito nets and fans are provided, and access to the chalets is paved and well-lit, which is welcome when the desert gets dark. There’s also a two bedroom Reiterhaus/Family House, offering more space for families or groups of up to four.
Location
The lodge is located 30 kilometers southeast of Sesriem, set within a private nature reserve. Situated close to the Namib Sand Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site, it makes a comfortable retreat to return to after spending the day exploring some of the world’s highest dunes, as well as being conveniently positioned for visiting Namib-Naukluft National Park, Sossusvlei and the Sesriem Canyon.
Food and drink
Guests can enjoy all meals on the spacious, sheltered veranda, including tasty breakfasts, light lunches and candlelit dinners. The lodge serves farm-style cuisine using fresh vegetables from its own desert gardens. Afterwards, sundowners can be enjoyed as the sun sinks below the surrounding mountains, turning them pink and red.
Families
Families of up to four can stay in the Reiterhaus/Family House, which has a main bedroom and separate living area that doubles as a second bedroom.
Facilities and activities
The lodge has a pool and sun deck, while reception has a safe and Wi-Fi. Horse riding is a popular activity, with guided rides offered at sunrise and sunset, as well as horse riding safaris for more experienced riders lasting several days, which see you camp out under the stars. Staff can arrange balloon rides over the desert, while evening sundowner drives stop at scenic viewpoints where you can enjoy drinks and snacks.
Environmental and social responsibility
The lodge uses solar energy to power all of its electricity and to heat its water. All toiletries, such as the shampoo, soap and body lotion included in the guest chalets, are environmentally friendly.
