El Mapi

Machu Picchu, Peru

Sleek and modern but remaining down-to-earth, comfort and service are at the heart of El Mapi's operation, and while it may lack character it offers the excellent service levels found in other Inkaterra properties.

As with all hotels in Machu Picchu village, there are always people checking in and out, which makes for a busy atmosphere in the hotel's communal areas. However, the rooms are quiet and you can easily get away from the rush of the day.

OUR OPINION:

This is a comfortable hotel in the center of Aguas Calientes, representing great value for money. As you would expect from a hotel run by the Inkaterra chain, there's a pleasant bar, the rooms are well appointed and service levels are good.

Rooms

Guest rooms comprise Superior Deluxe rooms and a handful of Suites. All are fitted with either twin beds or a king size bed, blackout curtains, a hair dryer, safety box and phone. Panoramic windows look out to the surrounding landscape and the decor is simple but stylish. The Suites offer additional space, a sofa bed, living room and complimentary Wi-Fi access.

Location

El Mapi is located in the heart of Aguas Calientes village (or Machu Picchu pueblo), with various restaurants and cafés within easy access. The hotel is a short walk from the main bus stop to Machu Picchu as well as the daily covered market.

Food and drink

Dinner is included at El Mapi, and while the food is fine we do get some comments that the restaurant has a 'canteen' feel about it, with set dinner times (although these span several hours). If you prefer, you could try the Inka Grill opposite or the restaurant in the Sumaq Hotel (at the bottom of the hill on the way to Machu Picchu). You may also request a packed lunch to take out with you during the day.

The bar serves a variety of drinks, snacks and tapas, holding Happy Hours each day.

As the hotel charges for bottled water, you may prefer to purchase the large 2.5 liter bottles from Cuzco or Sacred Valley before arriving in Aguas Calientes.

Facilities and activities

A number of guided excursions can be arranged through the hotel, such as birdwatching, historical and archaeological excursions. Binoculars can be rented from the hotel, and a laundry service is also available.
