Dalí, Figueres and Girona

Surrealist Salvador Dalí lived and worked on the coast north of Barcelona for almost half his life and opened a suitably bizarre museum of his own work in his hometown, Figueres. This full-day tour offers you an insight into the life of the flamboyant artist and is led by a private guide who can interpret the exhibits and explain the different periods in the artist’s work. The tour also includes a visit to the historic city of Girona, where you’ll get to stroll the medieval streets and cobbled lanes, visit the landmarks and get an introduction to the city’s Jewish heritage.

The tour departs from your Barcelona hotel, where your driver and guide will pick you up for the trip to Figueres, Dalí’s birthplace.

The artist bought the town’s former municipal theater and transformed it into the outlandish Dalí Theatre-Museum, a carefully conceived and created space that remains one of his last great works.

Opened in 1974, the museum is a triumph of the surreal. It showcases the diversity of Dalí’s artistic repertoire and includes a separate showroom that displays jewels designed by the artist.

The building’s surreal exterior, complete with plasterwork loaves of bread and giant eggs, is just a small taste of the bizarre and eclectic collection inside.

From Figueres, you head to the medieval city of Girona, which was a powerful regional hub for centuries. With your guide to lead you around the city’s most handsome streets and important sights, you’ll be able to explore the narrow cobbled lanes and medieval walls along with a host of Romanesque and Gothic buildings.

Girona was also home to an important Jewish community, which flourished here until its expulsion in 1492. The former Jewish quarter, the Call, is an engaging place to wander, and your guide will point out various important sights related to this heritage.

Aside from the tour, you’ll have free time in Girona to stop and have some lunch (not included) before heading back to your hotel in Barcelona.
