Kurumba is the original private island resort in the Maldives, dating back to 1972 when the Maldives first opened up for tourism. It’s not hard to see why the resort was built here — it's an extremely photogenic, palm filled island, with a white sand beach and coral reef just offshore.
One of the larger resorts in the Maldives, Kurumba offers a wide range of facilities and there’s a definite buzz to the place, with plenty of people to meet and swap stories with. A variety of activities can be enjoyed during your stay, so whether you want to relax under a palm tree on the beach, explore the diverse wildlife found under the sea, or work on your tennis serve, you'll find something here.
Kurumba offers excellent value, and its proximity to the airport makes it a good option for those who would rather avoid a lengthy transfer. We love the fact that guests on an all-inclusive stay are free to use any of the restaurants here, while the reef found just offshore makes for excellent snorkeling opportunities.

Rooms
Accommodation consists of eight room, bungalow and villa categories, as well as the opulent Two Bedroom Kurumba Residence, which has two bedrooms for up to six guests and luxurious amenities such as two private pools, Jacuzzis and gazebos with day beds. All options are spacious and dotted around the resort’s grounds, with some located close to the beach for dazzling ocean views and others set in the privacy of the coconut grove.
Amenities include air conditioning, safes, satellite TVs, minibars, complimentary internet access, tea/coffee facilities and en suite bathrooms. Private outdoor space is also included, while the villas also come with their own pool or Jacuzzi. A number of the rooms can be interconnected to accommodate groups of friends or families.
Location
Accessed via a ten-minute speedboat ride, Kurumba is located close to the airport island of Hulhulé and is about 5 km (3 miles) from the capital island, Malé. The island is just 500 x 250 meters (1,600 ft x 820 ft) in size, so you’ll never be far from the beach.
Food and drink
Seven restaurants, three bars and one shisha lounge can be found on site serving a variety of cuisines and beverages, including local Maldivian, seafood, Arabic, Indian, Thai and Japanese dishes. Pastries and light snacks are available during the day from Thila and the café, while breakfast is served at Vihamanaa, including freshly baked bread, waffles and omelets.
For drinks, Kandu is an open-air bar with an overwater deck where you can enjoy fine wines and live entertainment, Athiri is the place to go for cocktails on the beach and Fez, a shisha lounge.
The resort can cater for most dietary requirements if informed in advance, including vegan, vegetarian and gluten free. Another bonus is that those staying on an all-inclusive basis are welcome to dine in any of the resort's restaurants, which is often not the case at other properties.
Families
The resort has a kids' club to keep younger guests entertained, and there are two children’s pools. The wide range of facilities and activities on offer here makes this a great resort for families. All accommodation options can fit at least two adults and one child, with interconnecting rooms also available.
Honeymooners
For a special experience, try 'Spa under the Stars', an open-air massage for couples that allows you to be pampered while picking out the constellations, and is topped off with champagne and chocolate-dipped fruit.
Facilities and activities
The resort presents endless activity options to suit all tastes, from water sports such as canoeing, wakeboarding, parasailing and jet skiing, to snorkeling and diving lessons, wine tasting, cocktail mixing classes and painting with a Maldivian artist.
Further facilities on site include two swimming pools in addition to the children’s pools, a gym, three floodlit tennis courts, volleyball, ping pong, snooker, air hockey, board games, a DVD library and an orchid nursery.
Environmental and social responsibility
Kurumba supports the Kudakudhinge Hiyaa Orphanage in Villingili by regularly donating money and equipment, such as furniture and TVs. It also has a number of measures in place to help reduce its impact on the environment, including recycling, reusing garden waste using a mulcher, composting food waste, investing in solar water heating systems and using LED lighting in high-use areas.
Spa Facilities
Kurumba's spa, the Veli Spa, is set among the tropical gardens of the island. Its contemporary styling and stone and wood construction lend it a calming air, perfect for relaxing with a massage or treatment.
Local coconut oils and herbs are used to create the spa products, which are used in treatments such as the Akarakaraa Theyo Dhemun, the resort's signature massage.
