The Slaughters Country Inn, the Cotswolds

The Slaughters Country Inn

The Cotswolds, The UK

This country inn dates back to the 15th century and was originally three farmworkers’ cottages before being converted to a private house in the 1920s. It was later a cramming school for the public school Eton and this legacy remains with rooms named after a significant teacher.

The 31 rooms are unique in size and decor, offering elegant but simple furnishings and period features such as original fireplaces and exposed beams.

The bar is rustic and informal, welcoming walkers with their muddy boots and dogs, and has a roaring fire on cooler days as well as a charming terrace. The more formal restaurant is where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served, with a focus on local produce and seasonal ingredients.

OUR OPINION:

Although rooms are simple, we love this charming country inn for offering excellent value for money in one of the most picturesque villages in the Cotswolds.

Rooms

Rooms are all unique in size and have simple but elegant decor. Many are designed specifically with families in mind; the junior suites include a sofa bed in the living area and there are also a number of family suites with two bedrooms and a living area with a sofa bed. The Cottage, with its own private garden area, is also good for families of four. Deluxe rooms are large with spacious bathrooms and antique furniture, while the superior rooms also include roll top bathtubs.

Location

The hotel is located in the heart of the tranquil and picturesque village of Lower Slaughter. Along with quaint cottages and a tea room, the tiny village has a shop selling a range of local products from blankets to books, as well as antiques. The bustling village of Bourton-on-the-Water is a 20-minute walk away along a country path.

Food and drink

There are two options for dining which include a rustic bar area for informal meals beside roaring fires, or the more sophisticated dining room where breakfast is served. For a special occasion the hotel's sister property, The Slaughters Manor House, is located just across the road and offers award-winning fine dining and afternoon tea.
