The Bears of Hallo Bay

Brown bear, Hallo Bay

Hallo Bay offers a variety of bear viewing areas with many different opportunities to observe Alaska's coastal grizzly bears in their natural habitat. This remote location boasts the highest natural concentration of grizzly bears in Alaska.

Anytime from May to October, Hallo Bay provides excellent opportunities to observe the bears. The area is a food-rich natural habitat where bears find all foods and do not leave the area, whether it be fish, berries, clams, or sweet grasses.

Guests board the morning flight from Homer to Hallo Bay which generally takes one to one-and-a-half hours in a light aircraft. Marvel at the sensational views of the coastal area of Kachemak Bay and the Alaska Peninsula, also known as "The Ring of Fire", an active chain of spectacular volcanoes.

On arrival you meet your interpretive guide for a thrilling guided walk to prime coastal bear viewing areas on remote Katmai National Park wilderness beaches. Bear viewing is by foot and there are usually four to five guests per guide.

It is important to note that guests walk through wilderness including grass, meadows and along the beach, and you need a reasonable level of fitness with an ability to walk approximately four miles.
