Dallas was founded in 1841 as a prairie trading post by Tennessee lawyer John Neely Bryan and his friend Joe Dallas.

Since then successive generations of entrepreneurs have amassed wealth here through trade and finance, first using cattle and then oil reserves as collateral. Contrary to popular opinion, there is no oil in Dallas but the city boasts a reputation for wealth, arts and culture.

6th Floor Museum, DallasThe city's darkest day was on November 22nd 1963 when President Kennedy was shot here, however, today the city is better known for its glittering skyscrapers, excellent museums and grand red brick warehouses of the West End Historic District.

Visit the dynamic Dallas Museum of Art, Pioneer Plaza, where a herd of sculpted bronze cattle are driven across the park, and the hip suburb of Deep Ellum with its many restaurants, jazz clubs and galleries. Twenty-five miles north of the city lies the famous Southfork Ranch where you can see the gun that shot JR.

Nearby Fort Worth is a much more Western city whose focus is Sundance Square. The Stockyards Area of Fort Worth with its wooden sidewalks and old storefronts is well worth a visit and every day, weather permitting, 15 or so Texan Longhorn cattle are driven down East Exchange Avenue much to onlookers' amazement.
