Nkwali Camp, located on Robin Pope's private land along the river bank and overlooking the South Luangwa National Park, has six open fronted chalets allowing you to fully appreciate the view. In the evening a metal frame and curtain is pulled across, just in case a hippo or elephant wanders too close. Each bedroom has double or twin beds, sweeping mosquito nets, tasteful furniture and large en suite bathroom with WC, basins and hot open-air shower. There is one suite with one large bedroom and spacious bathroom with two showers, as well as a day room with two single beds and another smaller bathroom. There is a lovely pool where guests can relax with a drink whilst watching the elephant who come to quench their thirst and forage on the Nile cabbage that grows in the waterway. The large bar, built around an ebony tree has lots of books, comfortable chairs and stunning river views. Dining is either in the open sided thatch dining room or outside under the stars. Sometimes, the camp even sets up dinners on the sandbanks in the middle of the river!

For those seeking more privacy, there is Robin's House, set on the same property but entirely separate. The house overlooks the Luangwa River and is ideal for families or honeymooners. There are two spacious en suite bedrooms and the house can accommodate four adults or families of five or six (depending on ages of children). There is a central dining room and lounge area as well as a private plunge pool. Guests also have access to the main swimming pool at Nkwali Camp. Families are well-catered for here, with specific safari activities designed for children.

If you are interested in responsible tourism, it is possible to visit to one of the projects that Project Luangwa supports as part of your safari. These include new schools which have been built, tree planting and a new library. For more information on the project, see www.projectluangwa.org. It is also possible to visit Kawaza Village. The village is not a set up, but the home of a family who have opened their doors to tourists. It is run by the wider community and employs up to 20 villagers. The accommodation is basic but it's well worth a trip if you're interested in finding out more about the culture and traditions of Zambian people. Do ask your Audley specialist as both visits require pre-booking.
