Muchenje Safari Lodge is situated on the western side of Chobe National Park and is perched high on the forested escarpment, offering sweeping views of the plains and the winding Chobe River below. Unlike most other Botswana lodges, Muchenje is owner-managed for a more personalised service, and with space for just a small number of guests there’s a warm, intimate atmosphere.
Panoramic views can be enjoyed from the central lodge, where guests can relax in the open-plan lounge and bar or enjoy a drink from the look-out platform. The swimming pool has excellent views from its deck and is set among natural rock formations to continue the feeling of being out in the wilderness, while each of the chalets is compact and simply furnished to create an authentic African ambience.
We’re very fond of Muchenje for its friendly, personal service and incredible scenery. Its location only 45 minutes from Kasane is convenient but also means that you can enjoy the highlights of Chobe National Park away from the crowds.

Rooms
Accommodation at the lodge is in twin-bedded thatched chalets, all with en suite facilities including a shower, flushing toilet and double hand basin. They’re each positioned on the edge of the escarpment, with private balconies offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. Ceiling fans help to keep the chalets cool, and electricity is available 24 hours a day. Further amenities include an electronic safe, wardrobe and writing table.
There’s also a family unit that can accommodate up to four guests, with a double bed and bathroom downstairs and two single beds upstairs in the loft. Simply but tastefully appointed, the chalets offer comfort without taking away the feel of a traditional safari.
Location
Located in the west of Chobe National Park, the lodge is a 45-minute drive from the town of Kasane, which lies close to the meeting point of four African countries: Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The airport in Kasane offers charter flights, making for easy access to the Okavango Delta should you wish to combine the two areas on your safari.
Food and drink
Guests dine together around a large sociable table in the open-plan dining area, which also features a bar. Food is delicious and well-presented, and after dinner guests can sit around the atmospheric campfire to exchange stories as the sun sets. There’s also the option to dine on your own private table should you prefer to have a more intimate dining experience.
Families
Children aged eight and over are welcome to stay at the lodge, although you can request for under eights to stay. The family unit is the best option for larger groups and those travelling with children, accommodating up to four people. Special family safaris are offered.
Facilities and activities
Activities include walking safaris, game drives in open 4x4s to see wildlife such as elephant herds, Cape buffalo, lion, leopard and African wild dogs, night drives and lunchtime river cruises to spot hippo, crocodiles and an array of birdlife. Trips to visit a local village are also offered to learn more about local life. Back at the lodge, there’s a library, swimming pool, gym and curio shop.
Environmental and social responsibility
The lodge has close links with the local primary school and can arrange trips for guests to visit the school where you can meet the children and teachers. It also works with the organisation Pack For a Purpose, which give guests advice on what they could pack that would benefit the local community they’re visiting.
