A few hours’ drive beyond Longji you pass from Zhuang to Dong minority villages. Clustered around the bends of the winding Lingxi River, four hamlets make up the village of Chengyang, whose wooden houses and small fishponds blend perfectly with the surrounding bamboo groves.
Each hamlet boasts an elaborate and intricate ‘wind & rain bridge’ and multi-tiered drum tower, characteristic symbols of the Dong community, each competing with the others in complexity and craftsmanship.
Around Chengyang
From Chengyang it is possible to continue the fascinating, if arduous, overland journey north to Kaili in Guizhou province or return to Guilin and fly on to your next destination.
