The Alpine Route is a mountain lover's paradise and offers not only stunning alpine views of the Tateyama Range and the Northern Japanese Alps, but also many excellent trekking opportunities.

Kurobe DamCentral to the traverse is the Kurobe Dam, constructed in the first half of the 20th century and a really staggering feat of engineering.

The most spectacular parts of the traverse are the cable car journey, overlooking the dam, and arrival at Murodo, which both offer 360 degree alpine views. This excursion is only open from late April to late October, due to the snow.

The most famous portion of the trip is the corridor of snow (Yuki no Otani), through which buses drive when the route opens in April.
