Tottori city lies in the north-eastern part of the Chugoku region and in the eastern part of Tottori Prefecture.
It was one of the greatest castle towns in the Edo Period (1603-1867), and the remnants of its glory are found in the ruins of Tottori Castle (currently Hisamatsu-koen Park), as well as the old samurai residences dispersed in the town.
Tottori's sand dunes
For many people the main reason to visit the area is to see the sand dunes located just 20 minutes by bus from the station. Tottori's dunes may lack the grandeur of those of the world's great deserts but are still quite a spectacle to behold covering an area of around 30 square kilometers.
