Toward the northeastern corner of the lake close to the Mozambique shores lies the tiny unspoilt Likoma Island, with its rocky promontories, golden beaches and huge baobab trees.
Colonial history
This sleepy island is steeped in colonial history, evidenced by St Peter’s Cathedral which was built by missionaries who came to the island inspired by the words of David Livingstone.
The Mozambique shores lie close by and are reached by a short speedboat trip from Likoma Island. Here visitors will find untouched wilderness stretching down to white sand beaches.

Kaya Mawa is frequently visited by a local choir and Malipenga and Chioda dancing teams. The Malipenga (male) and Chioda (female) dance team are an integral part of Malawi culture. Feathers in caps, socks pulled up to the knees, the haunting trumpeting of the calabash tells the story of colonial days gone by.
