ABode Glasgow

Glasgow, The UK

This conveniently-located boutique property set in a Georgian townhouse has an unusual and artful style to its central space, with tiled walls, a granite staircase winding around a water wall, and a vintage, gated elevator rising up through the middle. The corridors are equally retro in style, with white tiles covering the lower half of the walls and gold-embossed, lion-print wallpaper above.

Elsewhere in the public areas the decor is all pared-back modernism, while the 59 bright guest rooms are decorated with lively feature wallpaper, work by local artists and tartan throws on the beds. All rooms are en suite with a shower over the bath, but opt for one of the upgraded room types and you’ll get considerable extra space, as well as Nespresso machines and room for an additional bed.

Brasserie ABode has wooden floors, white tiled walls and a good menu including several classic dishes, while Pie & Brew is the hotel’s pub venue, with a focus on craft beers and homemade pies.

OUR OPINION:

We love the hotel’s unusual design and convenient location. The central stairs, gilded vintage lift, and the quirky rooms all have great individual style.

Rooms

Each of the 59 rooms here is bright and stylish with bold feature wallpaper behind the bed and tartan cushions and throws. Muted natural tones of moss, gorse and purple heather contrast with soft grays and warm woods in the Comfortable, Desirable, Enviable and Fabulous rooms. Enviable rooms and above have high ceilings, a Nespresso machine and a sofa bed, while Fabulous rooms have wood panels, a fireplace and large bathrooms with freestanding roll-top baths and a monsoon shower. All rooms offer free Wi-Fi and are fitted with air conditioning and secondary glazing to reduce street noise.

Location

ABode is situated on Bath Street, northwest of Glasgow Central Station around a ten-minute walk from the Gallery of Modern Art. The immediate street outside the entrance isn’t too inspiring but a main shopping street is just around the corner. It takes around 20 minutes to drive to the airport, depending on traffic.

Food and drink

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in Brasserie ABode, a bright and cheerful space with wooden floors, comfortable leather booths and tiled walls. The menu is limited but offers a choice of popular classic dishes. Beneath the hotel, Pie & Brew, is an informal pub venue which serves a range of hand-made pies and craft beers and offers regular live music and DJ sets in the evening.
