Located on the coast a few kilometres north of the historic town of Galle, the Lighthouse was designed by the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. A striking feature of this hotel is the spiral staircase between the entrance and main reception area — its sculpted metalwork balustrade depicts a battle between the invading Dutch colonisers and the Sinhalese. Situated on a rocky headland the hotel boasts wonderful views of the Indian Ocean, while grass terraces lead down to a small sandy beach (which itself is not very suitable for swimming).
A choice of dining experiences are available and the teak furnished Cinnamon Room, serving à la carte local and international dishes, and the informal Cardamom Café exude an atmosphere as evocative as their names. The 60 spacious bedrooms have wooden Dutch beds, teak writing desk and bathroom of wood and granite, and provide comforts such as minibar, tea/coffee making facilities and hair dryer. All rooms have a balcony overlooking the ocean, from where you can enjoy the sound of waves crashing on the shore. Additional hotel facilities include two large swimming pools with sun decks, fitness centre and Serena Spa which offers a range of pampering treatments.
