Set in a rugged fjord in the glacier-studded Kenai Mountains, Tutka Bay Lodge offers a scenic location and easy access to Kachemak Bay State Park.
The traditional lodge buildings are nestled in a secluded, scallop-shaped cove. The main lodge has a restaurant and lounge with sweeping views as well as a library where guests can learn about native Alaskan art, archaeology and ecology.
The six spacious cabins are rustic but homely with private bathrooms, satellite TV, high-speed internet access, and views of the ocean, mountains and forest. Outside, there's a wood-fired sauna and a hot tub, while the solarium offers sweeping views of the islands and inlets of Little Tutka Bay as well as moody Jakolof Peak.
All meals and non-alcoholic drinks are included with hearty dishes featuring local specialities such as halibut, shellfish and wild salmon. Informal breakfasts and dinners are served in the solarium and picnic lunches are provided for full-day excursions.
The lodge is in a prime spot for wildlife viewing with sea otters and bald eagles frequently sighted. Private hikes, kayaking, fishing and bear viewing can be arranged and are included in the cost of a stay, as is a complimentary massage and return water taxi transfers from Homer.
This will appeal to avid lovers of the great outdoors — Tutka Bay is well known for its range of activities (which include fishing and hiking), and its fabulous sunsets.

Rooms
The six spacious cabins are traditionally-constructed from local spruce and several feature prow fronts with huge windows offering panoramic views. Inside, the warm wood interiors are complemented by rustic wooden furniture and neutral textiles, and some cabins also have wood-burning stoves. Spiral staircases lead to upper floors in the two-story cabins, while large decks offer a space for evening drinks under the stars. Perhaps most romantic of all is the Loon Guest Suite which sits on stilts above the lagoon offering views of the fish swimming below your deck. Each cabin and room has a private bathroom and shower, satellite TV and high-speed internet access.
Location
Tutka Bay Lodge is located on the Kenai Peninsula across the bay from Homer, midway between Halibut Cove and Seldovia, and is adjacent to Kachemak Bay State Park. Tutka Bay, a rugged fjord, reaches 11 km (7 miles) into the Kenai Mountains where a series of glaciers form the massive Harding Icefield which presses down the other side of the mountains into the Kenai Fjords National Park.
Food and drink
Food is a highlight at the lodge with the restaurant menu making the most of local fish and shellfish as well as ingredients from the organic garden or foraged from the surrounding forest. Expect oysters, halibut and wild salmon alongside wild berries and mushrooms, sea lettuce and kelp. There are daily wine and cheese tastings and cooking demonstrations and guests can join a more comprehensive cooking course should they wish. Breakfast and dinner are casual affairs, served in the lodge solarium, while picnic lunches are packed for you to take on your day excursions, if required. All meals, soft drinks and coffee are included during your stay.
Families
Several of the cabins have more than one bedroom and the spacious Eagle's Nest sleeps five. Children's menus are available and there's a variety of activities suitable for families.
Facilities and activities
Along with a comprehensive library, jetted hot tub and wood-fired sauna, the lodge has a solarium, daily cooking demonstrations and a separate cookery school. There's also a small spa and daily yoga classes, as well as the option to go bear viewing, fishing, backcountry hiking, glacier trekking or mountain biking. Guests can also join a natural history tour or book a helicopter adventure.
